Introduction of Baoshan City

The Southwest Silk Route: Along Baoshan is the second of its kind in China. As early as over 2,000 years ago, China's silk products were world-famous, gaining a global renown. The well-known "Silk Route" was the main route for the exportation of silk during the Hang and Tang Dynasties. However, previous to the opening of this route, there was already the Southwest Silk Route extending from Sichuan to Burma and India via Yunnan. Like its northwest counterpart, it has made great contributions to world civilization.

 

Volcanoes and Hot Springs: Tengchong is a town surrounded by volcanoes. Starting from Baoshan city, and climbing over the Gaoligong Mountain, the China to India highway, built half a century ago, leads you to Tengchong Basin. In the distance you can see dozens of volcanoes, large and small, with dense trees growing around them.


Over 80 vapor springs and hot springs are scattered around the volcanoes, making this the second largest vapor field in China. The famous Yihong Hot Lake is one of the biggest hot spring lakes in China, covering a total area of 10 square kilometers. The most magnificent Dagunguo (boiling pan) Hot Spring, resembles a pan of boiling water, sending steam high into the sky. The Hamazui Fountain, with a water temperature of 95.5 degrees centigrade, looks like two frogs spraying out hot spring water. Pearl Spring is a pool of water with hundreds of spray holes in the bottom sending out pearl-like strings of hot bubbling water.

 

Culture of Baoshan City

Baoshan was called Yongchang in ancient times. Historically, it was the first residence for human settlers in western Yunnan. During the middle period of the Warring States Period (476BC-221BC), it was the center of ancient Ailao Kingdom. As the Ailao Kingdom turned to decline, Yongchang Shire, the origin of Baoshan City was established in the year of 69 of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) as the second largest shire in the country.

 

It was during the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties that it successively belonged to two ethnic regimes, Nanzhao State and Dali State. The name of Baoshan was first used in 1524.

 

Famous Attractions in Baoshan

Tengchong County: Lies at the western foot of Gaoligong Mountains, in the western part of Yunnan Province. This population consists of more than 10 ethnic groups, such as the Hans, Dais, Bais, Huis, Lisus, Achangs, and others, each with their own rich and colorful cultures and customs. Tengchog is a famous historic and cultural town, known as "the Homeplace of Overseas Chinese" and " Land of Culture". Besides, it is a "Geological Museum", a "Natural Botanical Garden" and a "Natural Museum" that scientists long to visit.

 

Heshun Township - Homeplace of Overseas Chinese: Heshun means peace and harmony. Moreover, Heshunxiang is a very beautiful place with many ornamental structures like pavilions, memorial halls or archways, lotus ponds, marble balustrades, etc. The most important scenic spot that a visitor to Heshunxiang cannot afford to miss is Shuidui, an ancient water mill near a body of limpid water named Yuanlongtan. Yuanlong Pavilion which overlooks the clear pond is an ancient structure.

 

The Graveyard of the National Heroes: The graveyard constructed to honor the martyrs at the battle of recovering Tengchong lies in the west of the county seat at about 1 kilometer's distance. The construction was started in 1944 and completed on the 7th of July, 1945. Covering over 10,000 square meters, the main structures are the memorial tower, the martyrs' tombs, the memorial hall and the gate. The pine and cypress trees densely planted on the mountain slope add to the solemn tranquility of the site.

 

Cluster of Volcanoes in Tengchong: Tengchong is located between the India Plate and Eurasia Plate, where crustal movements are active, earthquakes frequently happen and volcanoes often erupt. Tengchong volcanoes rank first in China in terms of their variety, size, good preservation and compact distribution. The Tengchong Basin is surrounded by a group of young dormant volcanoes, of which the most famous are Mount Dayinshan, Mount Maanshan, Mount Guipo, the Laifeng Hill, Mount Dakongshan and Mount Xiaokongshan.

 

The Hot Sea and Hot Fields in Tengchong: Tengchong is one of China's three major geothermal areas, known as "Land Abounding in Geothermal Resources". There are plenty of springs of hot water and hot vapour, called "Hot Sea". There are quite a number of hot fields as well. Tengchong is a resort where people can travel, take a bath and have medical treatment.

 

Yunfeng Mountain: Mount Yunfeng stands in Ruidian Township and over 50 kilometers away in the northwest of the county seat. Seen from a distance, the mountain looks like a bamboo shoot towering into the sky. The mountain got its name because there are often clouds covering its top. Mount Yunfeng is a holy mountain for the Taoists and enjoys great popularity in the western part of Yunnan and the north of Burma. Pilgrims from home and abroad often go there to make a pilgrimage.

Baoshan Travel Tips 1: Transportation in Baoshan

By Air: Baoshan Yunduan Airport is situated at the southern part of Baoshan and is 9 kilometers from the downtown of Longyang District, Baoshan City. It has one flight to Kunming per day with air routes totaling 362 kilometers. It costs 25-30 yuan to get to the airport from the city center by taxi. 
 

By Bus: National Highway 320 passes through the Baoshan city. Baoshan Bus Station operates bus lines to Gongshan, Ruili, Yuanxian, Xiakuan, Lijiang, Kunming, etc. The bus route between Baoshan and Kunming is 571 kilometers and 739 kilometers from Baoshan to Tengchong.

 

Taxi: Taking a taxi is convenient. The fare for Santana is 3 yuan for the first three kilometers in Baoshan city while 5 yuan in Tengchong County (After 22:00, the flag-down-rate increases to 10 yuan).

Due to the complex topography at low altitude in plateau, subtropical, temperate and plateau climatic types coexist in Baoshan. Its weather is moderate throughout the year, but the temperature varies greatly during a day. The annual average temperature falls between 14 and 17 degree centigrade (57.2-62.6 degree Fahrenheit).

 

BaoShan is a tableland located at lower latitude. As its landform and landscape are rather complex, therefore it has a climate that is “Four seasons spreading over one mountain, different climate within a short spread of distance”. It has 7 types of weather, namely north tropical, South Asian tropical, Mid-Asia tropical, North Asia tropical, Southern temperate, Mid-temperate and highland weather. 

 

The characteristics of Bao Shan’s climate is that the temperature variation is small, however, the daily temperature variation is great, its average annual temperature is 14 – 17 degree centigrade; it has sufficient rains, obvious dry and wet season. On the whole, it has a pleasant climate.
