Features of Guiyang City


Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province, is renowned for its colorful culture represented by various ethnic groups. It is said that in ancient times, the city was surrounded by dense bamboo groves and was famous for producing a musical instrument known as Zhu. Hence Guiyang is known also as Zhu. Guiyang is one of China's Spring Cities like Kunming. The climate is often mild and moist, neither extremely hot nor very cold.


The life pace of Guiyang people is rather laid back compared to that of other cities. Guiyang people have a habit of going to bed late and getting up late. Culture of Guiyang City


Guiyang is home to more than 30 minority ethnic groups including Miao, Buyi, Dong and Hui, etc. The Buyi and the Miao have the largest population of all. During the festivals, local people put on their gala clothes, which are very beautiful and each have their own characteristics. San Yue San


Time: The third day of the lunar March

It is one of the traditional festivals of the Buyi people, which was originally related to agricultural production. Nowadays, the festival seems juts to be a singing feast for the Buyi people. On that day, the Buyi people in Guiyang are going to gather together in the Xinbao Township, Wudang District of Guiyang City.


Liu Yue Liu

Time: The sixth day of the lunar June

This festival is an important day for Buyi people to worship the cook's god and the mountain god. The Buyi people living in or around Guiyang City will wear their holiday array and come to the Huxi Lake in the Huaxi Town of the Guiyang City. There, a series of celebrations are held, such as singing and dancing performances as well as playing of their musical instruments. The young males and females will take this opportunity to express love for their beloved ones.


Di Xi

Time: The fifteenth day of the lunar January

It is a form of local drama, held at Huaxi by Buyi people and other minority groups. The performers put on masks and costumes and engage in dancing and singing. Generally the performance tells a story of a battle or the loyalty between friends of ancient times.

On this day, large numbers of Miao people put on their beautiful costumes and congregate in the central area of Guiyang City to celebrate this great festival by playing the Lusheng and flute, singing antiphonal songs and dancing. It is said that this festival is for the Miao people to pay homepage to their heroes.


Attractions of Guiyang


Jiaxiu Tower (First Scholar's Tower): A landmark of Guiyang is Jiaxiu Tower, also called the First Scholar's Tower. It is situated on Fuyu Bridge over the Nanming River. Originally built in 1598 in the Ming times, the tower is magnificent and unique, and of great culture significance in Guiyang. Ascending the tower you can get a good view of the surrounding city scenery. Most impressive is the night scene of the Jiaxiu Tower. Colorfully decorated with lanterns, the tower is beautifully reflected in water, and strolling on the bridge a visitor may feel as if they have entered a fairyland.


Baihua Lake Scenic Area: It is found 22 kilometers (approx. 14 miles) in the northwest suburb in Guiyang, the Baihua Lake Scenic Area is a famous tourist attraction, which is famous for its natural beauty of lakes and hills. The scenery here is much like that of Li River Scenery in Guilin, thus the scenic area was given the nickname - 'Little Guilin'.


Forest Park: With a sea of various rare plants, animals and many other tourist resources, the park is an ideal choice for tourists to relax in the nature. Besides, Zhongshan Hall is rebuilt in memory of Sun Yat-sen, the great forerunner of Chinese revolution.


Hongfeng Lake Scenic Area: Located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Guiyang is the Hongfeng (Red Maple) Lake. It is considered to be the pearl of the Guizhou Plateau, and is the most fascinating among the three lakes in this part of Guizhou.


Hongfu Temple: Hongfu Temple is in Qianling Park, which is situated in the northwest of Guiyang, Guizhou Province. About 1.5 kilometers (about 0.93 mile) from downtown area, and is considered to be the most famous Buddhist site in the province.


Huaxi Park (Flower Stream Park): Huaxi Park forms the center of the Huaxi Scenic Area. Blending natural hills and rivers, idyllic scenery with ethnic features, it has gained the name of "Back Garden of Guiyang City".


Nightlife in Guiyang


Every day, after 18:30, street stands on the popular snack street-Shaanxi Lu will begin repairing mouthwatering snacks. As with Sichuan people, Guiyang people like the spicy food, but the spicy food in Guiyang tastes a little numb and spicy, which is different from Sichuan food. Hot pepper is indispensable to Guiyang dishes and even the three meals a day. In addition to some home style dishes, beer and various kinds of snacks, sea food from southern coastal area are becoming popular in Guiyang, too. As Guiyang people say by themselves that they enjoy eating and life.


Besides the local snacks, Guiyang has a special nightlife destination, the Vinegar Bar. Vinegar drinks are called the healthy drinks. In the city, young people like bars, pubs cafes and Koraoke just as people in other big cities, but Vinegar Bar are unique to Guiyang. You may be attracted by a variety of vinegar drinks such as the fruit vinegar drinks, drinks with special material like the sticky rice and the pearl powder.


Guiyang Food


It is said that Guiyang people working outside Guiyang would be sure to lick their lips when they think of Guiyang food. This reflects their love of food and the culture. Food in Guiyang mainly includes Qian cuisine and local snacks.


Qian (Guizhou) Cuisine tastes numb and spicy, which are two indispensable elements in Guiyang food. Numb refers to the condiment made from several spices and the spicy is mainly refined from the red pepper.


Another typical Guiyang dish, Suan Tang Yu (Sour Soup Fish) is most delicious. Originating not in Guiyang, but in the Miao region, this dish has become a typical dish in Guiyang. You can have the dish at Kaili Sour Fish Restaurant, No. 55, Shengfu Lu, Guiyang.


Si Wa Wa (Sliced Vegetable Baby) could well be the cheapest snack in Guiyang. It literarily means the Baby because it takes the shape of a baby in swaddling clothes. Actually it is a thin cake made of flour and stuffed with various sliced cooked vegetables such as the carrot, radish, celery and other vegetables. Sour and spicy juices are necessities when tasting the Si Wa Wa.


Chang Wang Mian (Chang Wang Noodle) could be the most popular snack in Guiyang. The name of Chang Wang implies auspiciousness. With a long history of more than 100 years, Chang Wang Noodle has been highly-praised by the people of Guiyang.


Shopping in Guiyang


The main shopping streets in Guiyang are Zhonghua Lu and Yan'an Lu. Department stores are mainly situated on Zhonghua Lu, the busiest commercial street in Guiyang. The Yan'an Lu is where you will find small goods stores and the night market, which are open until the midnight.


Guiyang teems with crafts, local products, especially the Dried Beef, wooden crafts, traditional Chinese medicines, Miao silver ornaments, ox horn products and unsophisticated totem masks. Small gifts like this are widely popular among tourists. An ethnic minority doll and a totem mask as small as a walnut shell would be unusual gifts to take home.


Embroideries and Cross-Stitch Products rank highly among traditional Guiyang crafts. Stores on Beijing Lu offer heaps of this kind of product and the prices vary according to their quality. Qiancui Hang on Beijing Lu is the best place to buy featured local products and crafts. Goods for sale here are always of good quality and, of course, are rather more expensive. Embroideries and silver ornaments produced in the rural area are treasured in Qian Yi Bao for their strong ethnic features.

You can also take the No.55 bus in Zilin An and get off when reach the stop named Zhuchang, and then transfer to a tricycle to reach the scenic area.
