Jingzhou, with a long history and brilliant culture, is known as 'a land of fish and rice', one of the richest areas in China, and has been a transportation hub and distribution center of commodities since ancient times. As early as 6,000 years ago, human activities began in Jingzhou, creating the Daxi Culture. The ancient city of Jingzhou (also called Jiangling) is among the first 24 historical and cultural cities designated by the State Council. Archaeologists and tourism specialists put it as one of the very few best preserved ancient cities in southern China.

1. Jingzhou Ancient City: The ancient Jingzhou city wall is exemplary in China for its size and preservation, and for its military architecture and aesthetics. A large number of precious cultural relics have been unearthed from the area of Jingzhou Ancient City.


2. Jingzhou Museum: A local comprehensive museum free of any ticket charge,  which is well-known for its excellent environment, rich stores and great archeologist achievements. Cooperating with other engineering projects, the museum has excavated over 120 thousand valuable cultural relics.

3. Relics of Three Kingdoms: The Three Kingdoms Period played an important part in Chinese history, when many great heroes were born and the famous military strategy '36 Tricks' were used perfectly. One of the four Chinese ancient classic works, Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Lo Kuan-Chung, was created just based on this period of history.


4. Ancient City Wall: Jingzhou Ancient City has well-preserved ancient city walls. The city's walls were destroyed and rebuilt several times through the city's history. The existing wall was built at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The length of the ancient wall is 10.5 kilometers, and it is about 8.8 meters in height.

Food that may be regarded as Jingzhou specialties are kamaboko and rice pudding. In addition, there are other special dishes in Jingzhou, such as Thousand Paper Braised Pork, hickory, green soybeans, mountain vegetables, Sweet and Sour Garlic, and Zhu Oranges.


Kamaboko is a Japanese word for fish that is filleted, combined with other ingredients and pounded to make a paste that maybe colored and molded and cooked in various shapes. The meaty loaf may be eaten dipped in sauce or added to noodles or rice dishes.

Rice Pudding has bright colors, a little oil, and is a little sweet. It is eaten from small shallow cups and has a pleasant smell.


Thousand Paper Braised Pork is made from fatty pork that is streaked with both fat meat and lean meat. After boiling in water and frying in deep oil, it is then covered with brown sugar and cut into thin slices in order to steam the meat.

Best Time to Visit Jingzhou China

By Air
Jingzhou Shashi airport was originally a simple airport constructed by the army of the Kuomintang. In 1992, the airport was reconstructed. It is ranked as a second class airport in China. Shashi Airport used to be the only airport in Jingzhou China. Now, Jingzhou Shashi airport has routes to 15 domestic cities including: Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen and other cities.
