Attractions of Jiuzhaigou


Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area: Jiuzhaigou Valley is a great masterpiece of nature having dreamlike scenery. It combines blue lakes, waterfalls, verdant forests, snow-covered mountains, and the folk customs of the Tibetan and Qiang peoples. In addition to the dreamlike sceneries, there are numerous flora and fauna in Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area.


Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area: The 'World Wonder' and 'Fairy Land on Earth' are names enjoyed by the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, which is well known for its colorful lakes, snow clad mountains, valleys and virgin forest. Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area are famed for its outstanding travertine (calcium carbonate) formations.


Fairy Pool Scenic Area: Located in Dalu Township, the Fairy Pool Scenic Area is a renowned attraction in the Jiuzhaigou Paradise. Pools of various shapes and sizes are scattered throughout the lush forest. The most celebrated attractions are the Golden and Silver Beach, the Double-Dragon Pool, the Divine Frog Sea, the Blue Dragon Sea, the Kermes Brooklet and the travertine waterfalls.

Songpan Ancient Town: situated in Jin'an Town of Songpan County, is nearly 200 miles from Chengdu (the capital city of Sichuan Province). Historically, it was known as Songzhou Town and was considered the 'West Portal of Sichuan'. It has recently gained a reputation as one of the most interesting historical towns in Sichuan Province.


Mounigou Valley: Mounigou, located to the west of Songpan Ancient Town, occupies an area of 160 square kilometers. It belongs to the western part of Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area. There are two major scenic spots in Mounigou Valley: Zhaga Waterfall and Erdaohai Scenic Area.

Mt. Siguniangshan (Four Maiden's Mountain) Scenic Area: it is an unspoiled wilderness park located in western Sichuan Province, near the town of Rilong in Aba Autonomous Prefecture. The main attraction of this scenic spot is unspoiled natural beauty. The unusual shapes of the mountain peaks are rarely seen anywhere else in the world. The blue sky, clouds and mist, snow peaks, ancient cypress forests, rushing waterfalls, and alpine meadows make this area a nature lovers dream.


Nightlife in Jiuzhaigou


With more and more travelers coming to Jiuzhaigou every year, the tourist industry of this region has sprung up vigorously. Now visitors can relax and enjoy a rich and interesting nightlife after their tours.


The first choice for an evening in Jiuzhaigou is the exotic dancing and singing performance of local Tibetan and Qiang people. The ethnic groups in China are well known for being good singers and dancers, expressing their various emotions in daily life.

The Jiuzhai Paradise Theater, located in the star-rated hotel of Jarpo Town, organizes a wonderful performance every night. Actors and actresses, wearing colorful Tibetan and Qiang national costumes, perform joyful songs and powerful dances to express their beauty and bravery. Some national musical instruments are played during religious activities and Tibetan weddings. Audiences are invited to participate in the Tibetan Guozhuang dance, usually held during some important festival or event. People sing and dance in a circle, changing their movement according to the musical rhythm.


To spend a quiet night after the day's adventure, go to Bianbian Street (near the entrance of Jiuzhaigou Valley) to sample a cup of unique Tibetan coffee leisurely or visit an exotic shop. This street, along with the wandering Baishui River, can also be a special destination area. There are pubs here where people can have drinks, meet fellow travelers and share their experiences and stories.


Jiuzhaigou Food


Near the scenic spot are several small restaurants that offer different styles of Chinese cuisine. A simple dinner can be found there at a reasonable price. The Xiaobu Snack, a popular restaurant, is located at Bianbian Street to the right of the entrance gate to Jiuzhaigou Valley. Most of the restaurants in the area can be reached easily on foot; however, taking a taxi will save time. Since the area has been inhabited by a large number of Tibetans for a long time, the authentic local food offers unique Tibetan flavors, such as the famous buttered tea and highland barley wine. The strong flavor of the Tibetan food might not please everyone.

Apart from the above choices, the restaurants affiliated with star-rated hotels around Jiuzhaigou provide better-tasting foods in a comfortable atmosphere. Jiu Zhai Paradise and Sheraton Jiuzhaigou Resort are two five-star restaurants that supply various kinds of good quality Chinese and Western food, especially the authentic Tibetan specialties. However, neither of them is the ideal choice for a budget-conscious traveler. Don't worry, for there are several lower grade hotels around the valley that serve some delicious food at reasonable prices.


Shopping in Jiuzhaigou


The most attractive souvenirs sold here are the variety of mysterious, exotic and colorful Tibetan decorations. For generations, Tibetans have inhabited Jiuzhaigou Valley. They are happy to share their beautiful native arts and handcrafts with people from all over the world. The Qiang people, another ancient minority in China, also live in this region and keep their distinct ethnic culture alive. A piece of beautiful Qiang embroidery is praised as one of the best souvenirs in Jiuzhaigou.


Additionally, the area also produces some tasty fruits such as delicious Diwen apples. Other bounties of the natural environment are a number of rare Tibetan medicinal herbs such as Chinese caterpillar fungus and fritillary. Of course, yak beef is another delicious snack which you can easily find around Jiuzhaigou. However, please check your country's Customs restrictions before buying some beef to take home.

Songpan Ancient Town:

Special Line begins at Chengdu Western Station bus station. The bus goes through Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Wenchuan, Maoxian County and Songpan, a total distance of 249 miles.


Mounigou Valley:

You can take a coach in West Gate Bus Station of Chengdu to Songpan County, and then change to a minibus to get to Mounigou Valley. It will take one and a half hours all together.

Elevated at a height of about 3,000 meters (about 9843 feet), Jiuzhaigou is influenced by the typical highland humid climate. As a result, this area is frequented by mild temperatures and extremely variable weather all year round. Therefore, several warm outfits are necessary during your trip here.


Although the temperature is not extreme, Jiuzhaigou still maintains four distinct seasons. Noted as a legendary 'Fairyland' and 'Earthly Paradise' with numerous charming mountains and lakes, Jiuzhaigou shows you a totally different but never-the-less amazing landscape at any time of the year.


The best time to visit Jiuzhaigou is autumn, especially from late September to mid-October, as the leaves change colors and the view is outstanding.
