Shannan Prefecture is located in middle and lower stretches of the ancient Yarlung Valley and bounded by prefectures of Lhasa on the north, Nyingchi to the east, Shigatse on the west, and the International border with India and Bhutan on the south. Shannan prefecture covers an area of 79700 square kilometers and there are 14 minorities living here including Tibetans, the Monba, the Hui, the Luoba and the Han people.

 

In the ancient time, the Shannan Prefecture is known as the Yarlong area and it is the birthplace of Tibetan Civilization. Why is Shannan prefecture the birthplace of Tibetan Civilization? Mindroling Monastery: Being one of the six most famous Tibetan Buddhism monasteries of the Nyingmapa Sect, the Mindroling Monastery was originally built in the late 10th century. The monastery works on presiding over the compilation of the Tibetan calendar and Tibetan books.

 

Samye Monastery: It is the fist Buddhist monastery in Tibet and famous for the sacred mandala design. If you are interesting in art and Tibetan culture, Samye Monastery is an ideal destination for you. It is also a popular pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists.

 

Tradruk Monastery: Built by King songtsan Gampo and later became the winter palace of the King and Princess Wencheng in Tsetang. There is precious relic –The Pear Tangkha. Made of 29026 pearls and different precious stones, this relic is 2 meters in length and 1.2 meters in breadth.

 

Yamdrok Lake: As one of the three largest scared lakes in Tibet, the Yamdrok Lake is over 45 miles long. Around the lake are the marvelous mountains covered by the snow and various crystal clean streams run into the lakes.
