One of the oldest cities in China, with more than 3,100 years of history, Xian is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home to the Terra-cotta Army.

 

The culture of Xian descends from one of the world's earliest civilizations. The Guanzhong Ren culture is considered the cultural antecedent of Xianese. Their features are satirized as the "Ten Strangenesses of Guanzhong Ren". Xian is also known for the "Eight Great Sights of Chang'an", a collection of scenic areas in the region.

1. The Qin Terra-cotta Army Museum: The Terra-cotta Army in Xian is an enormous collection of Chinese warriors made out of hardened clay. Some are armed with real weapons, standing in battle formation next to real wooden chariots. The collection also includes clay horses and is often referred to as ’the eighth wonder of the world’. 

 

2. Ancient City Wall: The first landmark visitors will encounter in Xian is the ancient city wall, which stretches round the old city. Xian was originally a walled city, and even today the wall is considered a landmark dividing the city into the inner part and the outer part. The city wall is massive-tall, long and thick.

 

3. Bell Tower (Zhong Lou): The Bell Tower of Xian, located in the middle of one of the busiest intersections of the entire city, was originally built in Ming dynasty. As its name suggests, its original purpose was to house the bells that were sounded every morning to announce the time to the ancient capital’s inhabitants.

 

4. Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayan Ta): The Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian is over 64 meters high and has 7 stories. It was constructed of bricks and each brick was individually ground into shape before being laid to ensure a perfect fit. Visitors climbing the interior staircases are rewarded with spectacular bird’s eye views of the surrounding area.

 

5. Mt. Hua Shan: There are five peaks standing in a circle and confronting each other on Mt. Hua Shan, the Morning Sun Peak, the Lotus Flower Peak, the Jade Lady Peak, the Landing Wild Goose-resting Peak and the Cloudy Terrace Peak, all of which have formed a lotus-shaped flower.

2. Musical Fountain Show: Musical Fountain is a must-see on your Xian tour. The North Square of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda covers some 110,000sqm and is the largest music fountain in Asia. Shows take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12:00 and 20:30 wintertime and 12:00 and 21:00 during summer.

The city’s strong cultural heritage is translated into three categories, traditional arts and crafts, folk handicrafts and replicas of cultural relics.

 

1. Folk Paintings: The folk paintings of Xian borrow their line drawing techniques and brush strokes from traditional Chinese brush painting. Popular souvenirs, the artists draw inspiration from cultural and historical figures, flowers, birds and animals.

 

2. Paper Cutting: Paper cutting in Xian is a popular folk art in Shaanxi Province and is used as interior decoration by locals during holidays and weddings. During these times villagers take to adorning their walls and doors with colorful paper cuttings to signify the celebration or holiday’s season.

1. Dongda Street: Xian’s version of Bond Street, this is the city’s most affluent commercial area, where Plazas and high-end boutiques are plentiful. Luomashi Garment Trading Market is in the area as is Tanshi Street Vegetable and Non-staple Food Mall.

 

2. Jiefang Road: Jiefang Road, less than 2 km long, is one of the busiest Streets in Xian, with 500 commercial, service, catering and financial organs. The Minsheng Department Store and Jiefang Department Store sit on the Street.

 

3. Shuyuanmen "Ming and Qing Street": Xian Shuyuan Street is the Ming and Qing Street constructed according to the architecture styles of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. In the Street, there are row upon row of stores selling ancient books, pottery and porcelain, rubbings of ancient paintings, tablet inscriptions and calligraphy, the four treasures of the study, etc.

 

4. Night Market with Dumpling Dinner in Xian: Xian has a wonderful night market near the central mosque that is a must-visit for a chowhound. They have loads of stalls with interesting and unusual foods, including loads of good sweets that are sort of reminiscent of Middle Eastern things, with a lot of honey and sesame.

 

5. Bazaar Area: Bazaar Area was located behind Xian Drum Tower in the Muslim Quarter around the Great Mosque. It is the best place to buy souvenirs in the city center. This is also a good place to buy folk art, specifically folk-style block prints in a single shop. This area is also full of fake name-brand products like watches, bags, clothes. Bargain hard.

  Xian Travel Tips: Transportation in Xian

Xian has many areas that are easily accessible on foot. In many commercial, residential, educations zones in the city, especially in the shopping and entertainment districts around the Bell Tower, underpasses and overpasses have been built for the safety and convenience of pedestrians.


Taxi: Taxis in Xian work 24 hours a day, managed by the Taxi Management Bureau of Xian City which records complaints. Customers are charged by meter.

 

Train: There are 6 passenger transport railway stations in Xian. Xian Railway Station is one of the eight major national railway stations. Other stations include Xian West, Xian East, Xian South, Xian North, Sanmincun, and Fangzhicheng railway stations.

 

Expressways: Xian currently has two ring road systems, the Second Ring road and the Third Ring road which encircle the city. These ring roads are similar to freeways, except that there are traffic signals on the Second Ring road.

Generally speaking, the climate in Xian is rather pleasant the whole year round, but the best time to visit Xian is spring and autumn. If you have to select just one season, autumn is the best tourist season between the two, avoiding the heat and rain of summer and coldness and drought.

 

Spring in Xian

Xian weather in spring, which lasts from March to May, is a warm season. The temperature during this time increases quickly, but is apt to fluctuation. Although there is occasionally dust storm due to the rapid increase of temperature, but the main weather is sunny.

 

Autumn in Xian

Xian weather in autumn, which lasts from September to November, is cool and moderate with amount of precipitation. However, entering late autumn, it gradually becomes sunny and dry. The autumn sky is clear and the air is crisp, when there is warm sunshine almost every day.
