Dai Culture

Xishuangbanna has a long history of Dai Minority. Dai people have been creating brilliant Dai culture during the last centuries. The dance of Dai people is famous throughout the world. The dance movements are imitation of animals, such as the popular “Peacock Dance”. The sculptures and paintings are also famous. The houses of Dai people – bamboo houses with classic elegance are the traditional minority buildings in China.

Every year on April 13th/15th the city of Jinghong, the capital city of Xishuangbanna, and neighboring villages celebrate the coming of the Dai New Year. Commonly known as the ‘Water Splashing Festival’ or the ‘Festival for Bathing the Buddha’, it’s the most important festival for the Dai people.

Attractions in Xishuangbanna


1. Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley: Situated some 47km north of Jinghong, the Mengyang nature reserve is home to Xishuangbanna’s native wild Asian elephants, it's the last remaining refuge of wild elephants in the whole of China.

2. Daizu Garden: It is a famous tourist attraction in Xishuangbanna China. There are 5 well-deserved natural Dai villages in the Daizu Garden. In this garden, tourists may not only enjoy the beautiful tropical landscape but also learn the splendid culture of Dai people. Girls must be absorbed in the famous dance –“peacock dance”.


3. Olive Dam (Ganlanba): This place has an altitude of 530 meters. It is the lowest point of Xishuangbanna area, so the weather is hot. The hot weather brings abundant tropical fruits here. Besides, preserved fruits are loved by tourists very much.

4. Chunhuan Park: A thousand years ago, the Chunhuan Park was an imperial garden. It has a famous bronze of Premier Zhou Enlai, memorizing that Premier Zhou took part in the Water-Splashing Festival in Chunhuan Park in 1961. There is a Dai Palace and peacock garden in the park, which blends natural landscape and humanity sight together.


5. Tropical Arboretum: There are large amount kinds of tropical flowers in Tropical Arboretum. Tourists may not only enjoy the beautiful flowers but also get scientific knowledge about it.

6. Single-Tree Forest: A tree does not make a forest. But a nine hundred year old banyan in Daluo Town of Xishuangbanna is the exception. It covers an area of 120 square meters with over thirty stand roots. This 70-meter-high banyan is an attractive and marvelous forest in itself.


7. Manfeilong Buddhist Pagoda: It is a Hinayana Buddhist architecture complex consisted of nine masonry pagodas of all sizes. It is also known as the White Pagoda due to its pure white structure.

How to Get to Xishuangbanna China


By Air
Jinghong is the arriving and departing port of Xishuangbanna tour. Jinghong's airport connects to numerous destinations in China and some in South East Asia (particularly Thailand). Although you can buy tickets at the airport, you're probably better off taking advantage of the larger selection of ticket vendors in town. The Xishuangbanna Airport is 6km south of Jinghong city. It costs approximately RMB15 and takes 20 minutes to travel from the airport to the town by taxi.


By Bus
3 long distance bus stations provide services to cities throughout the province. The most popular services with travelers are sleeper-buses with Kunming in the north and bus and minibus services southeast to Ganlanba, Mengla, Menglun and Guanlei (China's major Mekong port).


How to Get to Some Famous Attractions of Xishuangbanna China


1. Ganlanba: Ganlanba is on the Mekong River and also on the main road from Jinghong to Mengla and Laos, which gives you a few transport options.

By Bus
Buses run through Ganlanba to and from Jinghong, Menglun, Mengla, Guanlei, Jiangcheng, and other destinations.


The Banna Bus Station in Jinghong has buses to Ganlanba every 20 minutes from 7:30a.m. to 9p.m. daily. The trip takes about an hour and costs Y6.

By Bicycle
It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to cycle from Jinghong to Ganlanba. Although the route is flat (there are some hills, but none of them are very large), the road has many vehicles and is best cycled early in the morning.


By Boat
It is possible to float down the river from Jinghong, though this takes about three hours and must be specially organized.

2. Wild Elephant Valley: To Dai people, the elephant is the symbol of good luck, might and longevity. The wild elephants of Xishuangbanna China mainly live in the Wild Elephants Valley, at the juncture of the western and eastern part of the Menyang natural reserve. In the valley, there is an observation tower, especially built for tourists. The best time to see these impressive beasts is at dawn or dusk. There are currently 300 elephants living in the dense forest in Xishuangbanna, known locally as the "kingdom of elephants".


By Bus
The park is 45km north of Jinghong by the highway linking Jinghong and Simao. You can take the bus to Simao from the main bus station in Jinghong and get off at the park. The fare is around Y10.

3. Manfeilong Buddhist Pagoda: Situated on the top of a hill near Manfeilong Village of Menglong, 60km south of Jinghong. Built in year 1024, it's a famed stupa complex in Xishuangbanna. The pagoda is dedicated to Hinayana Buddhism (a small, conservative branch of Buddhism).


By Bus
From the main bus station in Jinghong, buses to Menglong run every 30 minutes from 8a.m. to 5p.m. The fare is Y10.

4. Tropical Plant Research Institute: As one of the major attractions in Xishuangbanna, it situates on Hulu Island, surrounded by rivers and mountains and containing a welath of rare and unusual plants, trees and flowers.


By Bus
At the main bus station in Jinghong, take a bus southeastwards to Mengla or Menglun and get off at Xiao Menglun town. Buses leave every hour from 7:30-15:00, fare is around Y15.
