Famous Attractions in Yangshuo

 

1. West Street (Xi Jie): West Street is the oldest street in Yangshuo with a history of more than 1,400 years. Situated at the center of Yangshuo County, West Street has become, since the 1980's, a window of eastern and western culture and the biggest 'foreign language center' in China.

 

Visiting Yangshuo West Street, you will be surrounded by an array of traditional folk and amazing international elements. Various shops, craftworks shops, painting and calligraphy stores, backpack shops, cafes, and Chinese Kung Fu academies jostle for attention.

 

2. Moon Hill: It is a huge slice of rock with a round hole in its center, and you mount 800 steps on a marble paved mountain path to reach it. At various angles it resembles from the new moon to a full moon. The region around Moon Hill is endowed with beautiful sight.


3. Impression Sanjie Liu: This is the world largest natural theater which utilizes the waters of the Li River as its stage, with twelve mist shrouded hills and the heavens as its backdrop. Mist, rain, moonlight, the hills and their inverted reflections in the river all become the ever-changing natural background in Yangshuo.

4. Assembling Dragon Cave: This is the only Karst cave in Yangshuo which can be admired both by land and by boat. The scenery in the cave is an extraordinary masterpiece of nature without any artificial management.


5. Big Banyan: Six kilometers (about 3.7 miles) away from the County of Yangshuo, you will find a prominent and towering tree--the Big Banyan Tree. It is also famous because the Chinese film 'The Third Sister Liu' was partly shot here. Thus a beautiful love story adds to the magic of this centuries-old tree.

 

6. Butterfly Spring Park: Butterfly Spring Park is located in the best traveling place of Moon Hill Scenic Area in Yangshuo. As a locale which brings together both a unique landscape and a rural setting, it is a typical representative of ecotourism sites in Yangshuo.


7. Yangshuo Countryside Cycling: Biking could be one of the best outdoor activities in Yangshuo to see the other face of China. It is charming and special in the fast-paced world to do a leisurely bike ride to appreciate the real countryside. There are many routes to choose from, and these different routes can be from very relaxing to very adventurous depending on your needs.

 

--Yulong River: The Yulong River is mostly placid, and the scenery along the river is a highlight because you can see simple farms with water buffalo and rugged wild scenery. The Yulong River is a fun place to go rafting and see the area.

 

--Xingping Village: Located 27 km from Yangshuo, Xingping is an ancient town with a history of more than 1300 years. Apart from the well preserved Ming Dynasty architectures, Xingping boast some of the best natural scenery around the area, somewhat better than that that in Yangshuo.

Yangshuo is always praised as the 'Paradise of Petty Bourgeois' in China. This is mainly due to its colorful nightlife both in West Street and in other parts of the county. Night Scenery of West Street West Street (Xi Jie), also known as 'Foreigners Street', attracts tourists from all over the world.


There are many bars and cafes along the street, such as the Romantic Bar, the Si If Bar, the TinTin Bar, the Blue Bird Bar and the Global Café. At night, the street comes alive with tourists, students and locals drinking, chatting, singing and dancing in the bars and cafes. The lights and bustle, mixed with the sounds and sights of different languages and cultures, make for a unique and interesting experience.

 

For peace and quiet, take a short walk from Yangshuo West Street to the Li River. Sitting on the riverbank, looking at the golden fishing lights on hundreds of floating bamboo rafts and the rolling spindrifts in the river, it is easy to become engrossed in the simple beauty.

Although Yangshuo is just a small county, its traditional dishes and snacks are well-known world-wide because of their dainty appearance and uniqueness. Here, we just recommend to you some of the most famous ones.


1. Beer Fish (Pijiu Yu): Beer Fish This dish is probably the most symbolic dish of Yangshuo. Live carp from the Li River is fried with its scales and is then stewed after several seasonings such as local beer, chili, agarics and tomatoes are added. The dish not only looks attractive, but also tastes fresh and tender with a hint of spiciness, yet remains a little sweet.

 

2. Niang Dishes: Niang is a traditional yet unique cooking method of combining various ingredients for stuffing (usually consisting of meat or egg) into a type of carrier (made of vegetables or bean products), then braising, boiling or frying them together.

 

3. Lipu Kourou: Fry the taros and streaky pork in the oil separately and place them alternately in a bowl, then braise them together. After both the taros and pork are cooked, reverse the bowls and leave them lying on a plate. The dish always has a golden color and tastes fluffy and tender but not greasy.

As a small county of Guilin, Yangshuo doesn't have its own airport or railway station. However, it can be reached from Guilin through various means because it is just 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the city.

 

No matter in which way you arrive in Guilin, you just need to go to the South Railway Station where you can take the regular buses directly to Yangshuo. Alternatively, you can buy a cruise ship ticket at Zhujiang Passenger Wharf to cruise to Yangshuo. In this way, you can enjoy the charming scenery along the Li River, although it costs a lot more than taking a bus.

The best time to visit Yangshuo is from April to October when it is relatively mild and pleasant and the scenery is more lush and beautiful. Yangshuo is famous for its many unique festivals that take place from early May until the end of the year.

 

1. Folk Song Singing Festival (August 15th): Every year on the night of August 15th in the lunar calendar, attractive young men and women of the Zhuang minority group will gather near the Moon Hill. Under the romantic moonlight, they sing dulcet folk music echoing expressions of love to each other. Singles can use this opportunity to find a potential lover by echoing their songs.

 

2. Temple Fair in Xingping Town (September 19th): Every year on September 19th in the lunar calendar, Xingping people hold sacrificial rites to the Goddess of Mercy, who is believed to be able to relieve people from their sufferings.

 

3. Li River Fishing Lights Festival: Started in 1999, this festival is held annually on the Li River in November in the Gregorian calendar. During the day, the river's pure water and the surrounding green hills form a serene and beautiful picture. At night, fishermen in the nearby villages arrive to fish in the river.


4. Beer Festival: Since December 31st, 1999, the festival is held at the very end or very beginning of each year. Foreigners gather together to perform their own music and dances. The local people also present their traditional dances and the two groups intermingle in the spirit of fun. The beer drinking competition is the climax of the festival. All these activities and the mix of cultures give this festival an exciting and exotic flavor.
