Zhangjiajie Overview

Zhangjiajie is famous worldwide for its pristine national scenery and the government's potent policy on tourist infrastructure construction in recent year has boosted the region's tourist industry and made it one of the new-rising popular tourist destinations in China. Wulingyuan Scenic Area

1. Wulingyuan Scenic Area: Wulingyuan Scenic Area, lying to the north of Zhangjiajie China, is a charming tourist attraction. It is one of the 40 famous scenic spots in China. The spot boasts of natural beauty where mountains, valleys, forests, caves, lakes and waterfalls exist in total harmony. Over 560 scenic sights can be found here.

 

2. Zhangjiajie Scenic Spot: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, set up in 1982, is the first authorized national forest park in China. The area covers 480 thousand square meters. This park, together with Suoxiyu Natural Resource Reserve, Tianzishan Natural Resource Reserve and Yaozizhai makes up the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, also known as Zhangjiajie Scenic Spot.


3. Phoenix Town: The town is situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province in an area of outstanding natural beauty where mountains, water and blue skies prevail. Upon entering the town you will be impressed by its air of mystery, elegance and primitive simplicity. This is a world that is dominated by the colour green.

 

4. Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve: Located in the northern part of Wulingyuan Scenic Area in Hunan Province, Tianzi (Son of Heaven) Mountain Nature Reserve is one of the four scenic spots in Wulingyuan. In Zhangjiajie China, the cuisine of the Tujia ethnic minority group has its own flavor but retains the primary characteristic of Hunan cuisine - a tantalizing sour and spicy flavor. The sautéed and pickled dishes are also very special. The characteristic dishes in Zhangjiajie are in the following:


1. Tuannian Dish: It is a boiled dish made with radish, bean curd, cabbage, shallot, pork, and chili. It is not only delicious but also represents a good harvest, the reunion of the family, and the remembrance of the Tujia ethnic minority group's ancestors.

 

2. Blooded Tofu: It is actually made from pig's blood and bean curd, which is fragrant and pairs well with wine.


3. The Sour Fish: It is a cured dish usually made in summer. It doesn't taste fatty or smell fishy and can be stored for a long time.

 

4. Gastraodia Tuber and Black-boned Chicken Soup: It is a healthy, secret folk recipe made from high quality Gastraodia Tuber and Black-boned Chicken.


Local Snacks

Here are some representative types that we recommend.

 

She Meal is made with sticky rice, preserved ham, and a wild vegetable called Hao. The ingredients are fried in lard and vegetable oil. It is a tradition among the Miao ethnic minority group to eat She Meal during the “Chun She Festiva” in March.


Sangzhi Salted Dried Tofu is said to have been a popular food in Changsha, Wuhan, and Guangzhou during the Qing Dynasty. It is often given as a gift because it contains as many nutrients as milk. And those who eat the Sangzhi Salted Dried Tofu find their skin is soft and smooth, thus it is also considered a good food for maintaining one's appearance.

1. Tujia Stickup Picture: Tujia Stickup Picture is the most beautiful handicraft produced here. The artists use the root, branch, and bark from a tree, plus stone and grass to create landscape or character pictures.

 

2. Tujia Brocade: Tujia Brocade is another kind of handicraft. It was said to be the royal tribute during the Qin and Han dynasties. It is a combination of weaving and embroidery with a flavor of primitive simplicity and deep folk tradition.


3. Guiwen (tortoise veins) Stone Carving: It is a local handicraft in the Tianzi Mountain Natural Resource Reserve. Guiwen (tortoise veins) Stone is the fossil of an ancient life-form, and the craftsmen use it to create stone carvings in different shapes such as tortoises, cattle, horses, or dragons.

 

4. Chinese Gooseberry: When coming to Zhangjiajie, be sure to taste - the Chinese gooseberry fruit because it is the best fruit in Zhangjiajie China. Sangzhi County is the hometown of the Chinese gooseberry.


5. Tea: As a tea-producing area, Zhangjiajie boasts many famous brand teas such as Qingyan (green rock), Mingcui (tea green) Tea, and Longxia (lobster) Tea. Although people of the Han Nationality are the principal part in Zhangjiajie, the populations of ethnic minority groups like the Tujia and Miao are sizeable. The night life is not as modern as that in the big cities, but it definitely has its own flavor.

Tourism is a major industry in Zhangjiajie China and people visit the city particularly to see the folk singing and dancing performances at night in Wulingyuan Scenic Area or at the Charming Xiangxi (refers to Zhangjiajie)Theatre. In Zhangjiajie there are two lists of plays of the folk singing and dancing performance: one is “Charming Xiangxi” and the other “Dream Zhangjiajie”. At the show of ‘Charming Xiangxi', the actors all come from the local Tujia and Miao families, and their fair-sounding singing and multicolored folk finery are the highlights of the party. Performances of Xiangxi Magic and Xiangxi Ganshi add to the mysterious and thrilling luster of the show. The performance lasts for three hours, and it provides a window into the soul of the culture of Zhangjiajie.


Snacks in the Streets of Zhangjiajie China
At night, the streets of Zhangjiajie are full of vendors selling barbecue and local snacks. One such snack, Glutinous Rice Balls in Rice Wine Soup, is made of small glutinous rice balls, Chinese dates and sweet rice wine. This snack is not only very nutritious, but tasty as well. The cost is typically CNY1. Bean curd, grilled dried Tofu, Grilled Beef Skewers, and Grilled Mutton Skewers are very special local snacks found in the night market and are very inexpensive. The Tujia minority group has a long history of wine making. By Air

Covering a total area of over 445 acres, Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport was put into service in 1994 to meet the needs of the city's blooming tourism industry. The terminal is uniquely designed in the traditional architectural style of the local Tujia people. To date Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport has served over 50 destinations to mainland Chinese cities, Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Xian, Shenyang, Tianjin, Nanjing and Changsha.

 

By Train

There are two railway stations in Zhangjiajie. One is a small station located in Cili County which is used for local traffic. The other is the main Zhangjiajie Railway Station located in Yongding District, 12 kilometers from the city center. From Zhangjiajie more than ten big and middle-sized cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha can be reached. Bus No.1, 2, 6 and 7 connect Zhangjiajie Railway Station and the city center.


By Long-Distance Bus

The Zhangjiajie Long-distance Bus Station is located at the intersection of Huilong Road and Renmin Road in the city center. There are regular buses to cities such as Changde, Shanghai, Changsha, Yueyang, Wuhan, Dongguan and Zhuhai. Buses to the nearby Yangjiajie Scenic Area and surrounding counties such as Feng Huang (Phoenix) County operate every day. Take bus No. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 to the Zhangjiajie Long-distance Bus Station.
