Main content of Zhouzhuang: It is one of the most famous water townships in China, noted for its profound cultural background, the well preserved ancient residential houses and the elegant watery views. It has been called the "Venice of the East".


Brief introduction of Zhouzhuang


Zhouzhuang, an ancient town located between Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou, dates back to AD 1086. With its profound historical inheritance and unique cultural heritage, Zhouzhuang is renowned for its typical Southern Chinese riverside scenery, elegantly-crafted bridges, murmuring streams and classical dwellings, as well as its distinctive local traditions. It has been shortlisted as a possible UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, and has already won many awards, including the Dubai International Award for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment and an American Government Award.

Famous Scenic Spots or Sceneries of Zhouzhuang

1. Twin Bridge: Twin Bridge, commonly known as the key bridges, which comprise of Shide Bridge and Yongan Bridge, are the most famous and are considered the symbol of Zhouzhuang Water Town. The reason why it called Twin Bridge is the Shide Bridge is east-west and has a round arch, and Yongan Bridge is north-south and the bridge arch is square. It looks like the key that used in the ancient times. It is the best place to expresses the ancient water town’s charm: clear water, green trees and small boat cross through the bridge aperture.


2.  Fu’an Bridge: Located at the eastern end of Zhongshi Street, Fu’an Bridge was the ancient perfect unique architecture as combination of the single-arch bridge. It was built in 1355 during the Yuan Dynasty. Fu’an means not only rich but secure. The unique trait of the Fu’an is the consummate combination of the single-arch bridge and the bridge towers.

3. Shen’s House: Located at the southeast side of Fuan Bridge, Shen’s House was the private property of the descendant of Shen Wansan, the first millionaire of Jiangnan (South of Yangtze River) in the early Ming Dynasty. The whole architectural complex is of the Qing's style and occupies an area of more than 2,000 square meters.


4. Zhang’s House: Located to the south of the Twin Bridge, Zhang’s House built by Xu Kui in the Zhengtong era (1436–1449) of the Ming Dynasty and bought by Zhang's family in the early Qing Dynasty. Located to the south of the Twin Bridges, Zhang House has more than 70 rooms and takes up about 1,800 square meters. With Ruojing River flowing through, Zhang House is a dapper and graceful residential house.

5. Chengxu Taoist Temple: Chengxu Taoist Temple, also known as “Sanctity Hall”, has more than 900years old. It stood on Zhongshi Street that is opposite to Puqing Bridge. The main building in Chengxu Taoist Temple is Yuhuang pavilions, Wenchang pavilions and Shengdi pavilions. Wenchang pavilions are the main pavilion which was built Song Dynasty.


6. Quanfu Temple: Quanfu Temple is situated inside Nanhu Garden, aka the Pearl of Zhouzhuang, itself located behind (south of) the Former Residence of Ye Chucang. It was a set of ornamental and practical antique-shaped water tower which was built in 1987. The temple has 5 layers and 33 meters high. There is stairs up to the tower roof. Visitors can see the whole landscape of Zhouzhuang Water Town. It is a landmark in Zhouzhuang.

How to Get to Zhouzhuang Water Town

By Air
Zhouzhuang has no airport, but travelers can arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, Nanjing Lukou Airport or Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport first, and then take a coach to Zhouzhuang Water Village. The nearest airport is Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, and the length of the time for a journey by coach is about 1hour.


By Train
During your China travel to Zhouzhuang Water Town, travelers can take a train to Kunshan Railway Station in Kunshan City, and then take a coach from Kunshan to Zhouzhuang. Kunshan Railway Station is located at the meeting-point of Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway and Shanghai-Nanjing inter-city railway. After arriving at the station, travelers can take bus 88 or 111 to New Bus Station, which takes about 15 minutes, and then take a coach to Zhouzhuang in New Bus Station, and the length of the time for a journey is about 1 hour.

How to Getting Around Inside Zhouzhuang Water Town


Bridges are the links that make traffic by boat or by rickshaw or by foot in Zhouzhuang Water Village where, as indicated, there is no motorized traffic.

During your China travel to Zhouzhuang, you can rent a gondola oarsman (generally a female, in fact) to get you from A to B, just as you can rent a rickshaw for the same purpose, since there are bridges that connect all of the islets of the city of Zhouzhuang Water Town. Of course, you will wish to try both!


The price for renting a gondola oarswoman for a canal tour is 80 Yuan per gondola, which seat up to 8 adults. The gondola tour is a unique, out of the ordinary experience, partly because the "oarsmen" are so adept at push-poling their gondolas, and partly because they generally sing local arias or perhaps ditties (actually folk songs) while they work.

Best Time to Visit Zhouzhuang


In summer, the weather in Zhouzhuang Water Town is hot and stuffy while it's very cold and drippy in winter. Hence, spring and autumn are the prime times to visit Zhouzhuang for the moderate rain and temperatures. October is the best time to visit Zhouzhuang due to the light rain and moderate temperature.
